Things to Do For Free in Las Vegas:

The name Las Vegas conjures images of high rollers placing thousands of dollars on a single hand of poker and living in the lap of luxury. Unfortunately, most of us don’t have a cool million to spend when we take a vacation. If you’re looking to balance your time at shows and casinos with fun adventures, check out these free things to do in and around Las Vegas.

This is Vegas, and we’re obviously about that EDM life. But instead of tattooing it on our tightly sculpted derrières, we’re commemorating our undying commitment with a 40-foot tribute to the way it makes us feel. Ladies and gentlemen, meet 7,500 pounds of stainless steel, swaying to the beat, Bliss Dance.

Created by artist Marco Cochrane over the course of a year and a half (we can’t even commit to going to the gym for that long), she represented the feminine energy he experienced at the Burning Man festival in the Black Rock Desert. A little place we like to call “the middle of effing nowhere.”

Cochrane’s team of rock star welders worked with hand-cut steel rod before 3,000 LED lights – you read that correctly – 3,000 LED lights were installed to illuminate the statue from the inside. Hopefully, the symbolization of a woman glowing from within didn’t just go over your head.

In a collaborative approach to creativity, Cochrane allowed his female model to choose the pose she liked best and created the mold from it. The result is a statue frozen in an ultra transcendent pose, clearly experiencing that moment when the beat drops and takes you out of your body, making it impossible to think. So you just feel.

The artist, and women’s advocate, wanted to celebrate the appreciation and respect he has for females sans sexual objectification. In a town where scantily clad ladies are plastered on the sides of taxi cabs and party buses, this is saying something. Cochrane created Bliss Dance to be a symbol of women who are completely free from harm, a moment in time when their energy, happiness and power are elevated beyond the physical. Yeah, that’s deep.

Bliss Dance is the centerpiece of The Park between the New York-New York and Monte Carlo. This six-acre outdoor promenade features the T-Mobile Arena, several dining and bar options, outdoor seating and architectural features like water walls and shade structures that were made in the Netherlands.

Within the Silverton Hotel, a 117,000-gallon aquarium is home to more than 5,000 exotic fish, including sharks and stingrays, as well as vibrant coral.

Let your cares melt away as you watch 4,000-plus exotic fish swimming in the colorful Silverton Aquarium. It’s easy to lose track of time just by watching these peaceful sea creatures. Fortunately, there are comfortable benches surrounding the aquarium for your lounging pleasure.

If you grew up loving Ariel and Sebastian from Disney’s “The Little Mermaid,” then you’re in for a real treat. There may not be a singing crab belting out Caribbean-sounding tunes, but there are “mermaids” swimming in 117,000-gallon reef aquarium. The mermaids swim among the fish and do everything from blowing bubbles to interacting with kids watching from the outside.

But the mermaids are more than just pretty ladies donning colorful fins and bikini tops. These women have various backgrounds, from synchronized and competitive swimming to ballet. You’ll see them twirl, flip, dance and do other fun stunts — you would almost believe they really are part-fish!

You may wonder how the mermaids breathe underwater, since they’re swimming in the tank 15 minutes at a time. Every mermaid is scuba-certified and gets air from hookah ports throughout the tank.

In addition to the mermaids, you can also sometimes catch divers feeding stingrays. During the feedings, there’s a guide outside the tank who’ll take questions from the audience. The divers have a built-in speaker in their suit and can answer anything you want to know about the fish.

Divers also share fascinating facts about the aquarium. For instance, the staff spends 32 hours a week cleaning the tank. And if you ever wondered if the bigger fish attack the smaller ones, it rarely happens. The fish are well fed.

It’s fun to watch the fish in their own little world. You’ll see fish sticking close together like high school cliques and sting rays brushing up against each other as they glide and flap their fins. Some fish, like the sting ray and leopard shark, like to hang out on the aquarium floor. This is a sight to see since we’re so used to seeing fish on the go.

Speaking of sticking together, if you’re inspired to get married in Vegas and you happen to be scuba certified, the Silverton may have a wedding package for you. Say your “I Do’s” with a mermaid for a bridesmaid and a sting ray or shark as your best man.

While you’re in the area, make sure to check out the mermaid art gallery outside the Mermaid Cafe and Lounge. All art is available for sale and can even be shipped out of state.

Every season, the Bellagio Conservatory has a brand-new floral extravaganza to showcase the beautiful sights and colors of Chinese New Year, spring, summer, fall and winter. Most hotels have gardeners, but the Bellagio has 120 of them. That’s not including the designers, engineers and electricians who work behind the scenes to make all that magic happen. With 15,000-18,000 visitors to impress every day, you don’t have to be a genius to understand why they need so many hands on deck.

Five times a year: Chinese New Year, spring, summer, fall and winter, the Bellagio Conservatory team creates a full-blown floral production. For an entire week, the staff work 24 hours a day to transform the nearly 14,000-square-foot space with tens of thousands of flowers, trees, and plants.

The horticulturalists, who are artists in their own right, create jaw-dropping displays that most people couldn’t even make with paper, let alone flowers. It’s pretty safe to say that they have more creativity in their pinky fingers than most of us do in our entire bodies.

During the course of each seasonal exhibit, more than 10,000 potted flowers are hand-watered and switched out every two weeks. Don’t worry, all the wilted flowers are reused and converted to mulch, in fact 90 percent of the conservatory is recycled. How’s that for green? These creations are so impressive that more than 5 million visitors a year come to experience them.

The free Fall of Atlantis fountain show entertains audiences with special effects and animatronics figures who recount the myth of Atlantis. If all shopping malls had special effects and fireballs, there’d be a lot fewer bored husbands in the world. The Fall of Atlantis show inside the Forum Shops at Caesars is a display of fire, water and nine-foot-tall talking statues.

The story is set in the kingdom of Atlantis, when King Atlas has to decide which of his bratty kids will rule the throne. Your sibling rivalry doesn’t even come close to these two fit-throwers. Sure, you may have fought over toys, food or even listened in on each other’s phone calls, but this feud is pretty fierce.

In the end, the family learns the ultimate lesson — let’s just say it doesn’t result in a “time-out.” While we’d normally hate to spoil the ending, it can get pretty crowded and a little hard to understand what’s going on. Don’t worry if you can’t hear what the characters are saying, it’s more fun to narrate the story yourself with a couple of drunken buddies.

It’s a free show, and while there are some pretty cool features like heat and sound waves, there are a few hokey ones too. The costumes and props were created by the same geniuses who worked on Thor and Pirates of the Caribbean and there’s also a 20-foot winged dragon. Let’s be honest, you just don’t see that every day.

The show plays every hour on the hour, starting at 11 a.m. While you’re there, check out the 50,000-gallon aquarium nearby. There are more than 300 saltwater fish that will have you fighting the urge to sing “just keep swimming.”

At The Park, you won’t have to worry about anyone fighting over where to eat – that’s because everyone will be more than happy to dine here. Simply put, The Park’s six-acre promenade is not your typical dining experience. The attractive outdoor space offers dining, attractions and entertainment, all rolled into one.

Prepare for pink, because it’s time to head to Flamingo Island. Home to a flock of bright-pink Chilean flamingos, parrots, hummingbirds, and quail – totaling 300 birds – Flamingo Las Vegas is a bird lover’s oasis in the desert. While the habitat is open 24 hours a day, feeding times are at 8:30 A.M. and 3 P.M. If you’re there in the evening, stop by the Margaritaville lounge and restaurant for live music, which usually starts around 10 P.M.

More Free things you can do in Vegas:

Incredible public artworks on the 67-acre City Center campus include 15 works by artists such as Nancy Rubin, Claes Oldernburg and Coosje van Bruggen.

Within Crystals, CityCenter’s high-end mall, light artist James Turrell has installed Shards of Color—four recessed geometric shapes lit in neon.

This fall, Rick Harrison opens a kingdom for his devoted followers in the form of Pawn Plaza, a giant shopping center made out of shipping containers with retail and restaurant tenants like a barbecue joint, tavern, Italian ice place, and a poutinerie. New residents just announced for the opening: Inna Gadda di Pizza and Pawn Donut & Coffee.

You could visit one of the many small wedding chapels around Downtown Las Vegas, or you could hold your dream nuptials at Denny’s, on Fremont Street. Splurge for the $95 wedding in the wedding chapel the around-the-clock pancake house has conveniently installed (it comes with a cake made of pancakes), or just gawk at it with your family between the hours of 4 p.m. and 10 p.m., when kids eat free.

Similarly, the waterfall atrium at Palazzo, with a two-floor waterfall and seasonal flowers, is a great place to experience virtual nature, at the entrance of the Grand Canal Shoppes.

Inside the Forum Shops at Caesars, the newly revamped Fall of Atlantis show’s giant talking statues and pyrotechnics are fun to watch, but the nearby 50,000-gallon aquarium is even better. Enjoy this water entertainment without guilt: Vegas resorts account for just seven percent of the Las Vegas Valley’s water use: overall, some 80 percent of the Strip’s water is returned to Lake Mead.

Check out the Downtown Container Park, a retail, dining and play park made entirely of shipping containers (look for the 55-foot-tall fire breathing praying mantis outside). Find the free entertainment calendar, including a new outdoor family movie series, on the park’s website.
