The Working Fundamentals of An Air Conditioners As A Machine

The working process of Air conditioners can be related to the working of refrigerators because of both works in the same way. The only difference is unlike the refrigerators instead of cooling just some small insulated space, an air conditioner maintains the temperature of a room, a whole house, or even an entire business premises. Behind the scenes, it uses chemicals that easily convert from a gaseous state to a liquid and back again.

Through this chemical, the heat from the air inside of a home is used to the outer space. As a machine Air conditioner have three key components, compressor, condenser, and evaporator. In general, the compressor and condenser are usually located on the outer part of the air conditioner. Whereas the evaporator is present in the house, sometimes as part of a furnace. That’s the part that heats our house.

The Process Behind The Scene:

When an air conditioner gets switched-on the working fluid reaches at the compressor as a cool and low-pressure gas. After that, the compressor squeezes the fluid. This process packs the molecule of the fluid closer enough together. Which means closer the molecules together higher its energy and its temperature. After this, the working fluid leaves the compressor as a hot, high pressure gas and flows into the condenser.

If someone observes the air conditioner part outside a house, look for the part that has metal fins all around. The fins act just like a radiator in a car and help the heat go away, or dissipate, more quickly. But when this fluid comes out from condenser, its temperature drops and it becomes much cooler and its state has changed from a gas to a liquid under high pressure.

This liquid passes through the evaporator through a very tiny, narrow hole. Where on the other side, the liquid’s pressure drops, when it does it begins to evaporate into a gas. As the state of liquid changes to gas and then it evaporates, during the process, this extracts heat from the air around it. The heat in the air is needed to be separated from the molecules of the fluid from a liquid to a gas.

The evaporator of the air conditioners has the metal fins which help in exchange the thermal energy with the surrounding air. So by the time the working fluid leaves the evaporator, it gets cool and become a low pressure gas. Then it is returned to the compressor again to begin the process all over again.

The evaporator has a connected fan that circulates the air inside the house to blow across its fins. Since the hot air is lighter than cold air, so the hot air in the room rises to the top of a room. In the vent air is sucked and goes down to the air conditioners ducts. As soon as the heat gets removed from the air, the air is cooled. And then it is blown into the house through other ducts usually at the floor level.

This process is being continued over and over until the room’s temperature reaches the temperature we want to have inside the room. The thermostat present in the system senses the level of temperature required and once the temperature is maintained it turns off the system automatically. Once again when the room warms up, the thermostat turns the air conditioner system until the level of temperature reaches to the desired one. 

To make a prototype of a similar system, first, we take a gas, like Freon, and place it in a sealed vessel. Then pressurized this gas using a compressor. And as it pressurized the gas gets hot by absorbing the heat in the atmosphere. Then this hot gas gets circulated through a series of tubes that dissipate the heat in the atmosphere.

The gas can lose lots of its own heat, which means, in other words, its temperature decays and it gets really cold when we reduce the pressure. As it cools it becomes a liquid. And this is how and when we get cold. This system is so powerful and efficient that it can even be implemented inside a car. So to use this system in a car, it requires very little adaptation from its early applications as a refrigeration device. And since after studies it has been discovered that the refrigerant Freon R-12 is harmful to the earth’s Ozone layer, so now it’s been phased out for automotive use, and being replaced with the slightly less efficient, but harmless R-134a refrigerant.

For years it was against the law to service our own air conditioning system since it was using a harmful refrigerant without a license. But since now as the refrigerant is safer, user can all work on own A/C systems. But some old systems still use the same harmful refrigerant like same old cars have not been converted from the old R12 to R-134a, but this conversion can be done easily on ac repair center.
